All that glitters is gold

GoldHaving reached their 10-year historical peak, gold prices are getting dizzier at the top. Yet, given the unyielding demand generated by punters, investors, and consumers alike, prices are seen stubborn in the days ahead. Soaring inflation amid weak global economic indicators has made gold quite enchanting - a tradition that has its roots in time immemorial. By the end of the second quarter this year, global gold demand stood at 919.8 tons, down by 17 percent year-on-year, according to World Gold Council. However, in value terms, gold demand surged five percent to reach $44.5 billion. Almost half the pull came from the jewellery segment with buyers from India, China, Saudi Arabia and USA topping the list. These four countries together made up 46 percent of the world demand. Indias mushrooming economy, up-coming festivals and better-than-expected harvest is expected to further strengthen sales. Meanwhile, as world equity markets collapse and the European debt crisis creates ripples across countries, demand for gold-backed ETFs has also increased in the past few years, experiencing a 152 percent zoom in 2008. Investors flock to safer havens like gold, as US Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) yields fall to its sixty year lows. Demand for technological uses of the metal remained more or less unaffected; whereas physical demand for bars and coins rose by 42 percent in 2QCY11 over the same period last year. Yet again, India and China dominated this rush. Mine production was the only positive contributor to the gold supply, increasing by a modest seven percent in 2QCY11. However, the price of the metal is hardly determined by the equilibrium of demand and supply, as the bull-run is largely driven by speculation. Analysts compare the recent ascent to the commodities boom of 1980s, when gold prices spiked to reach a record high of $850 per ounce, only to plummet soon and settle within $300-$400 for some years to come. Adjusting for inflation, this record still stands waiting to be broken, which in other words, means 2000-dollar-prophecy may well come true. So long, wedding revelers.

Pak fiscal system size grows to Rs9.2tn

State Bank’s Financial Stability Review 2009-10
Staff Reporter
KARACHI: Pakistan’s financial system size, in terms of assets, increased to Rs9.2 trillion by end-June 2010 showing a robust growth of 20 per cent from December 2008 level of Rs7.71 trillion, says State Bank’s Financial Stability Review 2009-10, which was released here on Tuesday.
The Report, which presents an assessment of financial stability for 2009 (CY09) and the first half of 2010 (1HCY10), is based on the theme of “Role of Government in the Financial Sector” and assesses the government’s developmental role in enhancing the financial development in the country.
The Report said that stability of the financial system is largely derived from the pre-dominant position of the banking sector, as other components of the financial system continue to grow at a more gradual pace.
“Domestic banking sector assets constitute 73.2 per cent of total financial system assets”, the Report added.
It said the bank deposits, which have a key contribution in maintaining financial stability, grew by 13.5 per cent in CY09, and 8.2 per cent in 1HCY10, bringing the total deposit of the banking system to Rs5.1 trillion by end-June CY10.

Gold Rises:,Fed intent report knocks USD

LONDON: Gold climbed on Wednesday as the dollar fell sharply against the euro and yen after a report suggested the US Federal Reserve planned to boost growth by purchasing $500 billion in US Treasury debt over six months.

Spot gold was bid at $1,344.00 an ounce at 1625 GMT, against $1,336.00 late in New York on Tuesday. US gold futures for December delivery rose $8.30 an ounce to $1,344.30.
The precious metal fell 2.5 per cent on Tuesday, its biggest one-day loss since July 1, after China raised its benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points, sparking a dollar recovery.
While fresh weakness in the US currency helped prices to rise back above $1,340 an ounce, its move has been relatively muted after Tuesday’s hefty losses.
“We’re seeing a pretty big move in the dollar to the downside and we’re not seeing that reflected as much in the gold market to upside,” said Jeff Pritchard, an analyst at Altavest Worldwide Trading.
“It looks like the market maybe got ahead of itself and that correction yesterday put things back in perspective a little bit. I definitely don’t think the uptrend is over, but it might be a little less fierce upside than we’ve seen recently.”
Silver was at $23.80 an ounce against $23.32, having also slipped by the most since July 1 on Tuesday with a 4.1 per cent fall. It is still one of the biggest climbers of the precious metals so far this year, up 41 per cent.
Platinum was at $1,676.49 an ounce against $1,667.50, while palladium was at $584.99 against $573.08.
The white metals also fell on Tuesday in gold’s wake, but analysts say their firm underlying fundamentals are expected to lend support.
Demand for the autocatalyst metals is expected to improve this year as the car industry continues its recovery, while mine supply in South Africa is expected to be constrained. -Reuters

Brighter Outlook for Economic Recovery Makes Euro Stronger

Second Week of Gains for Euro, Analysts Continue Forecast Decline
The euro rallied last week despite the grim forecasts. This week the currency extended its rally, most notably against the dollar, against which it rose to the highest level since April. The analysts remained largely unconvinced, though, and continue predict the weakening of the euro.
It’s true that main reason for the euro’s strength against other currencies was the weakness of those currencies. The US dollar weakened after the Federal Reserve signaled about the next phase of the quantitative easing. The Japanese yen lost its strength on the talks about the intervention. The Great Britain pound suffered from the concerns about the possible influence of the budget cuts on Britain’s economy.
While all that is true, some good news from Europe itself also emerged. Germany was the main “producer” of the favorable data as the report about the improving German business climate and the increasing import and export prices contributed the most to the improving sentiment about the European economy. Nevertheless, most analysts think that the fundamentals remain largely depressed and the euro rose for the most part due to the weakness of the other currencies. Therefore, they don’t expect the rally to last long.
EUR/USD rose from 1.3050 to 1.3490 this weak, closing near its weekly high of 1.3493m the highest level since April 20th. EUR/GBP rallied from 0.8334 to 0.8523 after touching the weekly high of 0.8576. EUR/JPY went up from 111.89 to 113.67. This week was the second week of gains for the euro against all these currencies.

Gold hits record, silver reaches 30-yr peak

LONDON: Gold rallied to record highs in Europe on Friday, with spot prices knocking on the door of $1,300 an ounce, as expectations grew that further quantitative easing may lead to increased volatility in the currency markets.
Spot gold hit an all-time high of $1,299. 95 an ounce and was bid at $1,298. 30 an ounce at 1416 GMT, against $1,293. 50 late in New York on Thursday. US gold futures for December delivery hit a record $1,301. 60 an ounce and were later at $1,299. 60 an ounce, up $3. 30. Silver also reached its strongest in 30 years at $21. 45 an ounce, tracking gains in gold. Spot gold prices are struggling to take out resistance at the $1,300 an ounce level, but remain firmly underpinned by expectations of further weakness in the dollar, which slipped 1 percent versus the euro on Friday. With the dollar getting definitely weaker with the pass of every session, gold has little work to do other than to head higher to compensate for dollar s slide, said Pradeep Unni, senior analyst at Richcomm Global Services. Most of the market focus has been extreme dollar weakness and possible impact on the currency as the marketencounters weaker economic data. Gold has risen more than 4 percent so far this month and hit record highs for five consecutive sessions to Wednesday, extending gains after the Federal Reserve indicated it may consider further quantitative easing, undermining the dollar. The move came at a time when a number of major economies were moving to curb strength in their currencies in an attempt to bolster growth, boosting gold s appeal as an alternative investment. The US Fed is obviously contemplating, and the market is expecting, some kind of statement on quantitative easing, said Deutsche Bank analyst Daniel Brebner. The influx of new money in the system raises longer term expectations for inflationary forces. If you look at peripheral Europe, you have sovereign risks which have been increasing for both Ireland and Portugal. There is a likelihood that there will be some kind of move by the European Central Bank to resolve that challenge. These two factors, and the likelihood that the dollar value will continue to erode, mean there is potential for higher prices, he added. We could see some significant moves in gold and silver over the next quarter. SILVER HITS HIGHEST SINCE 1980From a technical perspective, gold is poised for further gains after an 18 percent rally so far this year. Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said the metal could reach $1,539 an ounce by the end of the year, based on technical indicators. Silver prices are also well positioned after breaking through technical resistance at $21. 20 and $21. 35 to rally to their highest since 1980. It was later at $21. 34 an ounce against $21. 14. The metal has seen strong investor interest as gold has rallied, with holdings of the world s largest silver-backed exchange-traded fund, the iShares Silver Trust, rising to an all-time high of 9,582. 59 tonnes on Thursday. A sizeable factor underlying the current performance of the precious metals sector as a whole arrives from portfolio managers who, in an effort to erode less impressive market returns earlier in the year, are putting money to work in gold, but also silver, platinum and palladium, UBS analyst Edel Tully said in a note. While gold s investor audience continues to evolve, the rest of the precious metals have been on the receiving end of new interest over the past two months. Platinum was at $1,642. 75 an ounce against $1,638. 10, while palladium was at $561 against $550. 95.

Gold, Oil and China

It’s been a lively year for both gold and oil investors but the year to remember may be the one ahead.
Goldman Sachs is forecasting a 27 percent jump in energy and a 17 percent rise in precious metals over the next 12 months. On the oil side, Goldman credits a rebound in industrial production for a 520,000-barrel-per-day increase in China’s implied oil demand in August (year over year). As you can see from the left-side chart, Chinese oil demand has remained a fairly consistent story going back several years.

Globally, world oil demand was up 2.4 million barrels per day on a year-over-year basis in August, according to Goldman Sachs (right chart). Rising demand from emerging nations has created a 600,000-barrel-per-day global supply deficit since May. This month saw a reversal in the U.S., with weeks of growing inventory surpluses swinging to draw-downs after Labor Day.
The long-term prospects for oil haven’t changed. Estimates from Wood Mackenzie and Deutsche Bank show that global oil production will decline 12 percent by 2015 without new investment. Production rates in Britain, Australia, U.S. offshore and Norway have declined 15 percent or more since 2000. Finding future reserves is increasingly difficult and costly, so prices will have to be higher to make developing these reserves worthwhile.
New all-time high prices for gold this week leave many to wonder if we’re nearing a top, but we think gold’s bull run may have further to go. Since mid-August, prices have risen on the back of a significant increase in net long positions on the COMEX and investor interest is near highs for the year. In addition, central bankers have also been stocking up on gold – for the first time since 1988, they will be net buyers of bullion in 2010.
This could also be just the beginning. BCA Research says gold is in a bull market and will “remain that way until macro and/or industry-specific trends change significantly.” BCA cites low real interest rates and high policy uncertainty as the twin engines powering gold higher.
Washington has yet to show how it will reduce the gaping federal deficit, and the Federal Reserve is expected to keep interest rates near zero well into 2011. When you throw in a possible return to quantitative easing, the prospects for higher gold prices look even stronger.
The sturdiest pillar supporting both gold and oil should continue to be China. Even though China was recently crowned the world’s largest energy consumer, the country’s energy demands are still small on a per-capita basis. And for gold, Chinese demand—government, investor and jewelry consumers—remains strong despite high prices. The World Gold Council predicts gold consumption there could double in the coming decade.
Fears of a bubble bursting in the Chinese economy have been deflated as the country prepares itself for a soft landing. Analysts at CLSA says China will remain “the world’s best consumption story” due to income growth, moderate inflation and low household debt. They expect GDP growth to be just under 10 percent this year, and 8 percent to 9 percent in 2011.
There will likely be short-term volatility in commodities, but we believe the enduring strength of the global growth story being led by China and other key emerging markets should be a powerful demand driver in the years ahead.
