ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Pakistan in the US has welcomed the introduction of a bill in House of Representatives seeking to grant Temporary Protection Status (TPS) to qualifying Pakistan nationals on account of situation created in Pakistan by recent devastating floods.
According to a press release issued on Saturday, the Bill is moved by Representative Al Green (D-Texas) co-sponsored by Reps Sheila Jackson Lee, John Conyers, Edolphus Towns, Alcee Hastings, Janice Schakowsky, Bobby Rush, Gregory Meeks and Gene Green. The Pakistan Embassy under the guidance of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the leadership of Ambassador Husain Haqqani had been consistently advocating grant of TPS to Pakistani nationals in the US and had taken up the matter with US authorities in several meetings.
“The bill is a timely initiative and consistent with the interests of the United States. It is also an appropriate manifestation of the values and ideals that have made the United States great,” the Embassy of Pakistan said. It also thanked Representative Green and his colleagues for taking the lead on this issue.
The Embassy hoped that Congress will be able to take action on this important matter and help ease the situation of a large number of Pakistanis in the United States.
It will also demonstrate the success of the efforts of both countries to engender better understanding between the citizens of the two countries, the Embassy said.-NNI
