0.2mn T urea to be sourced in Jan

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Muhammad Gondal Friday informed the National Assembly that the government would import 0.2 million tonnes of urea from Saudi Arabia to overcome the shortage. Replying to queries during the question hour session, the federal minister said that gas load-shedding has negatively impacted urea production which would be overcome by imports.
The imported urea would arrive in the country by January 2011, he added. He said that the government would provide subsidy on the imported urea, however added that there would be no subsidy on other fertilisers. Gondal said that at present the price of per bag DAP is Rs3100-3200 where as the price of urea is Rs850-900/bag.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Industries and Production, Dr Ayatullah Durrani told the House that the prices of urea have increased by 9 per cent on average from June 2009 to June 2010 whereas prices increased on average by 12 per cent from December 2009 to December 2010. Similarly, the prices of DAP have increased by 36.17 per cent on average from June 2009 to June 2010 whereas its prices have increase on average by 5.6 per cent from December 2009 to December 2010.-APP
